July 15, 2025 – Concerned about deteriorating conditions in marginalized communities impacted by destructive urban heat islands, flooding, and enduring challenges brought about by crime and lack of economic opportunity, the Smart Surfaces Coalition (SSC) and the African American Mayors Association (AAMA) announced a first-of-its-kind collaboration to encourage Black mayors to implement proven climate response strategies in U.S. cities. The Smart Surfaces Coalition is a unified consortium of 40 environmental and industry organizations troubled by the increasing public health and safety dangers associated with global warming in communities grappling with generations of redlining and unequal public policy. AAMA serves as the only organization exclusively representing African American mayors in the United States.
