Nick Bridge
Nick was the UK's Special Representative for Climate Change under five British Foreign Secretaries. During this period he built and led the largest network of climate diplomats in the world, enabling the UK to collaborate with every country to build international initiatives such as the global Powering Past Coal Alliance. Nick oversaw the UK's successful diplomatic bid to host COP26, and was part of the UK Presidency team that delivered the Glasgow Climate Pact, under which:
net-zero commitments rose from under a third to over 90 percent of the global economy,
common carbon market rules were agreed,
world leaders committed to end deforestation by 2030, and
the Breakthrough Agenda was launched to accelerate industrial decarbonisation.
At COP26, Nick chaired the informal consultations with all Parties on finance, and loss & damage, the two most contentious agenda items.
Previously, Nick served as British Ambassador & Permanent Representative to the OECD and the IEA, and served in diplomatic postings to; Japan during the Asian Financial Crisis; China, as it emerged as the key driver of the world economy; and the United States, where he oversaw a major increase in UK-US climate, trade, science, and carbon market cooperation, and was on the Board of British American Business. He was also Foreign Office Chief Economist.
In the UK Treasury, Nick co-led the launch of a $4 billion international facility to immunize half a billion people in the developing world, estimated to have saved over 5 million lives.
Nick was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Honours List 2022, for services to tackling global climate change.
